Voice Services

Introduction

Providers of voice services are satisfying new market requirements for lower costs per minute and for integrated media services by leveraging VoIP technology in their networks.

Bearing voice places new demands on traditional data-only IP networks. Providers must ensure that their IP Infrastructure can manage scalable support of the following functions:

  • Prioritization of voice traffic, to ensure its quality.
  • Resiliency to keep calls connected, even during unexpected network events.
  • Session awareness - the intelligence to handle calls appropriately.
  • Protection against security attacks at both the media and signaling layers, and against service compromise and abuse.
  • Connection of VoIP networks, including proper security measures, address translation, and admission control.

Working closely with our strategic partners, Juniper Networks provides a complete, standards-based solution for voice services over IP. Our VoIP infrastructure solution factors the diverse needs and considerations of migrating legacy voice and introducing advanced media services with VoIP.

Description

The current capabilities of IP networks must be enhanced in order to address the new needs of dynamic, real-time applications. Voice impacts the entire network infrastructure - from the underlying routing to the protective security layers and the voice-specific traffic processing functions of network borders.

Assure VoIP Calls

Support for voice necessitates a network that is intelligent enough to prioritize traffic types and sufficiently resilient to prevent dropped calls. Prioritization must occur not only under normal operating conditions, but also when the network is experiencing high utilization levels. Juniper Networks routers were designed to perform appropriately under any network condition. These routers include ASIC technology, the modular JUNOS operating system, and enhanced quality of service (QoS) capabilities. They support automated hardware failover and graceful software restart, for high equipment availability. Their IP/MPLS features enable resilient network configurations that automate virtual connection failover, without call interruption, in less than 50 milliseconds.

Securing the VoIP Infrastructure

VoIP presents unique security challenges. Providers must protect not only the VoIP media, but also the VoIP signaling, since both can be targets for attack. Inadequate security can lead to denial of service (DoS), unauthorized access to VoIP systems, and other security breaches. Security devices must be able to handle the small packet characteristics of VoIP traffic to maintain call quality end-to-end. Juniper Networks Firewall/IPSec VPN and Intrusion Detection and Prevention (IDP) appliances defend VoIP networks from security threats, readily handling the unique processing demands of VoIP traffic at the scale required by provider networks.
