Provider Network Management

Introduction

Network management solutions that support IP-based networks and services must complement and integrate into existing operations support systems (OSS) infrastructure.

As service providers leverage new IP technologies for converged backbones, multiservice edge, secure voice over IP (VoIP), and other initiatives, they must roll out corresponding network and security management. Many providers are also introducing new premium services for IP, including "Triple-Play" offerings, for which service IP network management is an integral part of delivery.

Juniper Networks provides a rich set of service and element managers for its products, with open interfaces to integrate into upper-level OSS components. We call this J-Manage. We extend our own capabilities through established strategic relationships with OSS companies and independent software vendors (ISVs) worldwide - our OSS Alliance Program. Customers save implementation time and money with pre-tested, best-in-class applications for provisioning, fault management, customer care, and related applications for Juniper Networks platforms and enabled IP network management solutions.

Description

Multiservice platforms present complex network management challenges for service providers. Each new function of the network involves different issues and objectives, which often call for targeted applications to allow rapid implementation, in the face of time-to-market pressures.

Juniper Networks OSS program is an innovative approach to managing complex network configuration, provisioning, billing, fault management, and security issues. Our solutions focus on enabling service providers or independent software vendors to integrate Juniper Networks equipment into overarching multivendor OSS systems. Our J-Manage solutions for provider network management include the following.

Device and Element Management

Augmenting the usability of the JUNOS operating system for the J-series, M-series, and T-series routing platforms is the J-Web management interface. With existing off-the-shelf browser tools, users can access the J-Web integrated wizards to configure the router, set up firewall rules and Network Address Translation (NAT), and monitor service-level agreement (SLA) statistics. The J-Web interface also provides operations staff with detailed reports for troubleshooting, detection, and inventory.

The NetScreen-Security Manager provides management functionality for Juniper Networks security devices. The system delivers centralized, device life-cycle management for the firewall/IPSec VPN platforms, with granular control over configuration, network settings, and security policies. A three-tiered architecture maximizes performance and flexibility, and the optional NetScreen-Statistical Report Manager provides archival and historical reporting of device statistics.

Operations Support System (OSS) Integration

The J-series, M-series, and T-series routers include a JUNOScript application programming interface (API), based on Extensible Markup Language (XML). JUNOScript API provides a standard integration layer to broader management applications. The flexibility, ease of use, and reliability provided by JUNOScript API make it an excellent alternative to the existing Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) and Command Line Interface (CLI) scripting methods adopted by most OSS vendors.

Integration of Juniper Networks products into OSS systems is further supported by the OSS Alliance Program. Alliance partners develop applications that extend the functionality of Juniper Networks products, delivering robust and flexible network management solutions. These interoperable solutions ease network operations and are ideally suited for rapid service deployments.

Service Management

A key challenge for service providers is the ability to quickly and cost-effectively create and deploy new services to very large numbers of subscribers. By adding a layer of service intelligence that dynamically maps together users, the network, and content, providers can offer premium IP network services with an assured experience.

Juniper Networks Service Deployment System (SDX) is a robust, customizable application that provides subscriber management, service activation, and accounting capabilities. The SDX application solution maintains subscriber-related information and assists in implementing service-specific configurations in the underlying network, independent of the access technology. External systems can control the software's behavior with flexible, open interfaces. Using the SDX, providers can create and deploy new IP network services, such as video on demand (VOD) and IP television, with unique subscriber and application intelligence.
