Web I/O Acceleration Allows French TV Network TF1 To Handle Unprecedented World Cup Web Traffic
Campbell, Calif. and Versailles, France, June 24, 2002 Redline Networks and Silicomp Réseaux jointly completed an Internet acceleration project for e-TF1, the online arm of TF1, France’s largest commercial TV network. Three Redline Networks T|X Web I/O Accelerators installed at e-TF1’s data center allowed the site to easily handle the unprecedented traffic demand that occurred during the 2002 World Cup Soccer series.
"Thanks to the installation of Redline Networks T|X 2200 Web I/O Accelerators, we were able to manage peaks reaching 280,000 simultaneous connections since the beginning of the 2002 World Cup," explains Stéphane Allaire, e-TF1 Director of Technologies. "We were able to upgrade our infrastructure without modification and give users a faster and more pleasant web experience. We were able to do so while reducing server resources, telecom resources and bandwidth needed. With the T|X appliances, we were able to provide fast access times and good site flow with traffic greater even than what e-TF1 measured on September 11th."
"This project turned out to be a real success," emphasizes Frederic Benichou, VP sales for Redline Networks in Europe, Middle East and Africa. "With an expected increase in traffic for the 2002 World Cup, e-TF1 decided to make its infrastructure more efficient and prepare to handle a much greater number of users." Results obtained are exceptional. Web pages are accessed 2 to 5 times faster regardless of the content type (dynamic, static, HTTP, HTTPS) and the user access type (modem, DSL). There is increased server headroom, server loads are lower, and the number of simultaneous sessions is higher. Significant savings on telecom costs have accrued because of the 40% decrease in bandwidth used, which has provided a quick return on investment.
"In preparation for the expected increase in Web traffic, e-TF1 asked us to design an efficient and easily implemented solution to improve its Web infrastructures," states Christian Gaudin, Sales Director of Silicomp Réseaux. In order to meet the projected demands of increased Web traffic, e-TF1 reexamined the Internet infrastructure for their site. The results demonstrated a need to optimize HTTP flows and reduce outbound bandwidth. Prior to Web I/O acceleration, available solutions only enabled load balancing, Web caching or SSL acceleration, without intervening on the HTTP flow itself. As such, the solutions did not resolve problems linked with server operation and TCP/HTTP protocols. Redline Networks Web I/O acceleration technology was installed to allow persistent connections to all users with just a small number of persistent connections to the servers, multiplexed HTTP requests on the connections, the compression of data in real-time to clients, and the management of keys and certificates for secure connections.
